The Big Fake Wedding San Francisco 2015

Judy Lee

What is the Big Fake Wedding? We first heard of this event from another wedding dress designer who participated in the New York Big Fake Wedding the previous year. The concept is completely original and amazing - "It is a bridal show alternative complete with an emotional vow renewal ceremony, light bites and a dance-party reception. "Wedding guests" are brides- and grooms-to-be who get to truly experience the wedding vendors in action." We couldn't help it but jumped into this opportunity immediately!

With over 30 San Francisco Bay Area wedding professionals, the entire wedding production was oh so amazing! The concept was "European Sky" and vendors were given a color palette and inspiration board as a direction to create their designs to match this theme. All the pretty details and creativities involved to put this event together was mind boggling.

Check out our dress design process and all the gorgeous details from the event.

For this "wedding", we created an original wedding dress design just for the bride (Patricia.) Below is the timeline of the design and production of the dress. It is also the process that brides go through if they were to work with our studio Iridescence Bridal Couture for a full custom dress design

  • {14 months before the event} We met with Patricia to discuss the dress design and to get an overall sense of what she likes and dislikes. The goal was to understand her style to confirm that it would work well with her personality as well as the inspiration of the wedding theme. During this meeting, we also did a measurement fitting to prepare for the next dress making step.
  • {10 weeks before the event } The first muslin dress was completed and Patricia tried on a simple mock dress for fit. Making a custom designed wedding dress is an elaborate process - it requires putting together a muslin dress first to confirm that the style and fit are right before we make the final dress as fabrics and materials are expensive. This was also the time for Patricia to request any changes to the design before production.
  • {8 weeks before the event} The muslin dress was altered and design changes were made. Patricia tried on the dress for a final muslin fitting. Additional fine tuning were done to perfect the fit. Once the muslin and pattern were adjusted and finalized, the dress was ready for production.
  • {3 weeks before the event} The final dress was made but a fitting was required before details were added to the dress. This was also the time for additional tailoring to insure perfect fit.
  • {1 week before the event} The dress was completed and we were ready for the wedding!
